How to Be a Stylish Man | Focus on the Little Details

Men are beginning to understand the importance of style and how wearing properly fitted, high quality clothing will work in their favor.

Guys need to start focusing on the little details to take them to the next level.

While fit and high quality clothing are important, it’s the little things that make men stand out from the crowd.

It makes a great man greater.

Going in-depth with your personal style takes some effort. This is a good thing.

Accomplishing something difficult means only a select few have the willpower to succeed.

Being the select few to accomplish something is what success is all about.

I came up with a list that outlines some small but critical details on style that all men should pay attention to.

Most men overlook the things on this list. From now on, you will not be one of them.

Even incorporating just a few of these tips will improve your style and your attention-to-detail.

Shining your Shoes

This one is a no brainer.

Men’ shoes are probably the most judged item in their outfit so it’s important that they are well taken care of.

A man’s shoes should be shined in one week intervals or sooner if you have some sort of special event coming up.

Remember to get polish that closely matches the shade of your shoes. Do not put black shoe polish on your brown shoes gents!

Wear a Pocket Square

Pocket squares are one of those accessories that define attention-to-detail perfectly.

This squared fabric is very subtle on its own but can completely transform your look if done right.

Pocket squares are a great way to:

  • Add that splash of color to an outfit consisting of foundational colors.
  • Show off your unique personality without seeming tacky.
  • Provide balance to your outfit.
  • Encourages others to look at your upper torso and face.

As you can see, spending some time on your accessories can pay off in dividends.

Cufflinks

Very similar to the pocket square in terms of being a subtle accessory but can pack a punch with the right look.

Cufflinks are small enough to have some fun without ruining your look.

High quality cufflinks are seen as true luxury items. Some can fetch for large sums of money!

Get yourself some good cufflinks and try to show off your character.

Briefcase

This should be a requirement if your a business owner or work in the corporate world.

Even if you don’t, it wouldn’t hurt to have one as a sleek black briefcase is one of the greatest accessories a man can have in his collection.

A briefcase provides additional confidence to the man who holds one and commands respect from the people he interacts with.

A briefcase is a much more masculine and luxurious option than a messenger bag in my opinion.

Your Hair Style

Men understand that hair is important but how many take the time to determine which style is right for them?

Not many.

The two main things to consider right out of the gate is:

  • Your Hair Type – This can range from fine, which is easy to manage right up to the more limiting curly & coarse hair types. All types of hair have their strengths and weaknesses so with a bit of research, you can discover some styles suitable for you.
  • Your Face Shape –  The shape of your face can range from square to triangular and is a critical factor in determining if a style will suit you or look weird. Research the different types of face shapes to figure out what yours is prior to selecting a hairstyle.

Your Personality

How you act around others is as much a physical presence as is a perfectly tailored suit.

Some would even argue that personality can make or break you upon first meeting someone regardless of what you look like.

If you don’t have a great personality, take steps to improve this immediately.

A good first step is to begin talking to a bunch of people whenever you get the chance. I mean talk to everybody.

Get your confidence up and practice as much as you can.

It is important to do the following when interacting with others:

  • Smile – Similing makes you seem more approachable and subconsciously raises your spirits. This makes it much easier for others to open up and like you.
  • Listening  – A powerful communication tool that is often overlooked. Remember that communication is a two-way street. Listening may be more important than speaking as many people fall short in this area.

Matching Your Accessories

I have written about this in previous blog posts but it has enough importance to be mentioned again.

Always try to match the color of your accessories.

Wear your browns with similar browns, blacks with blacks. Basically any color accessory you have should compliment each other.

It really is an important detail that a surprising amount of men seem to ignore.

Do not be one of these men!

Add a Tie-Bar

Tie-bars have increased in popularity and for good reason.

The tie bar when worn correctly gives off the impression that a man is really well put together and takes care of all aspects of his appearance.

If a man takes steps to protect the misplacement of his tie, imagine how he is with other more important areas of his life.

Not to mention the look of a tie bar on a navy blue suit is pretty sharp.

A Classic Watch

Technology is definitely on the rise and will continue to be a dominant force in our day-to-day lives.

While gadgets like the smartphone and iPad are awesome, don’t let these devices, which have built in clock functionalities persuade you against owning one of the most stylish accessories available to men.

Of course I am talking about the man’s watch.

Having an elegant, classic watch will definitely get you noticed in today’s hi-tech world. Believe me, you will be noticed for the right reasons.

Paying attention to the little details of your style will always work in your favor. You will look great to others and more importantly, you will feel great yourself.

What about you? What small details not on this list do you pay extra attention to?

I would love to hear about them.
