Question From Readers | New Items to Purchase in 2014

Happy New Year fellow gents and ladies.

As we are beginning a new year, I would like to share with you the latest question I received from a reader over at the Toronto Independent Fashion scene, which a am a member of the style council on. Given that it’s the start of 2014, the content is relevant to all my readers. Let me know what  you think on the comments below.

Question: I am looking to create a new hip and modern look for the New Year, which new items should I invest in that I can incorporate with staples that I already have in my closet?

The New Year is always a great time to reflect on the year past and to bring some change for the future. This definitely applies to your wardrobe as well.

As men become more familiar with their personal style and become comfortable with what looks good on them, it only makes sense to continue to invest in your wardrobe to have a new fresh look. This is a great question and you are already on the right track by thinking of incorporating new items into your existing items in your closet. It makes the most sense to buy items that are extremely versatile and go was more then a few pieces you currently own.

Without further ado, here are the must have items to start off 2014 for men:

Double Breasted Sport Coat

It may be surprising to some, as the double-breasted sport coat has been out of favor for quite some time but that’s no longer the case. The double-breasted sport coat is definitely a great investment to make in 2014. What you will find different from the 2014 version compared to years past is in cut. The 2014 double-breasted sport coat is slimmer cut to keep up with the recent trends of fitted men’s clothing.

The double-breasted sport coat comes in various colors but looks best in either grey or navy blue as these can integrate really well with your existing wardrobe.

The Briefcase

Once upon a time, the briefcase was used by every corporate worker around to carry their work files, business cards and anything else they need on their travels form A to B. In recent times, the briefcase has combined excellent style with it’s proven practicality. A briefcase will be able to carry all of your essentials from your tablet & smartphone to your laptop or note pad.

Black and brown are your colors of choice for the briefcase as they look the most sleek and will keep you up-to-date in 2014 and beyond.

Polka Dot

Here is a trend that is making a big impact recently and will be an even bigger hit in 2014. Polka dots have been shunned upon for many years now for men and rightfully so. For the most part, designers do not know how to work with this type of pattern and tend to take it to the extreme by making the items too flashy. This results in tacky garments, which is something I would not recommend.

However, if you go with a pattern that is very subtle it can be a great addition to your wardrobe. The polka dot pattern looks great on button up shirts and a good way to express your character by adding color.

So there you have it. A selection of items that will be a great addition to your style and compliment your existing look as well. Always remember that you must be comfortable in the clothes that you purchase or else it will be something you do not end up wearing in the long run.
